About the Organization: 

​

Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Association (SBJSA) is a three-season sailing education facility in Sodus Point, NY.  SBJSA offers summer youth instruction, community boating activities, spring and fall instructional programming for scholastic sailing teams, and various other instructional programs throughout the year. 

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

 

The Assistant Program Director is expected to provide administrative support and staff oversight that emphasizes safety, proper handling of equipment, skill development, and provides an enjoyable experience for all staff and students in a manner consistent with the goals of the SBJSA Board of Directors. The person in the role will also be responsible for assisting in the coordination of our CIT program including the CIT evaluation process. The Assistant Program Director will also play a key role in media coordination and assist in grant data collection. 

 

The candidate should be a leader who is highly organized and self-motivated with excellent communication skills. A large part of this position includes communicating with parents, members, sailors, and other staff respectfully and effectively. 


 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Observe CITs during boat prep/rigging, sailing, dry land activities, lunch hour, de-rigging and at various other random times during the week to see how they interact with campers and other staff. Provide immediate feedback to the CIT as necessary.

  • Organize CIT work schedules alongside Instructors so they team up with different paid instructors each week of camp.

  • Collaborate with Instructors on scheduling when CITs will perform both dry land and water drills with their assigned instructor and work with the CITs to prepare them, observe them and then provide immediate, constructive feedback.

  • Meet with instructors and CITs at the end of every camp week to go through the weekly CIT assessment process. During a one-on-one with each CIT, share highlights of their strengths and growth opportunities and create a plan with that CIT for improvement in the week(s) ahead. Communicate and discuss this with pertinent instructors and the Program Director. 

  • Periodically during the camp season, review the overall CIT training process with the Program Director and, as needed, revise the existing CIT Training Program documents to keep them current and effective.

  • Participate and provide input to the Program Director and Head Race Coach when issues arise.

  • Assist the Program Director in upholding SBJSA Rules, including helping to interface with program participants.

  • Fill in for the Program Director on-site and assume that role whenever the Program Director is out on the water or is busy with tending to a specific out-of-office task. During this time, maintain communication with all staff members via SBJSA’s radio systems and respond to their needs or questions with support and direction if the Program Director is not available.

  • Provide general on-the-water support to instructors for observing students, towing boats, launching and retrieving sailboats, checking rigging, providing capsizing and/or injury safety support to the instructor, etc. 

  • Assist the Race Coach(es) in race course set-up.

  • Assist in organizing participants and staff for group events, including group assignments in each session, ex. Big Boat Day, Sandbar Day, Parent’s Day, Rainy Days, Treasure Hunt Day, games, etc. and help provide leadership for these events on the day they occur. Assist the Program Director in communicating these events to parents and campers ahead of time.

  • Film, and edit videos to be posted on SBJSA media following the SBJSA media guidelines and policies. 

  • Take photos daily. Organize these photos and videos in private Google Drive albums.

  • Work with the Director of Administration to assist in updating SBJSA media with any requested camp content.  

  • Collaborate with the Director of Administration and the Program Director in collecting and compiling key information to be gathered for our grant funders.

  • Assist in collecting and compiling all lesson plans and learning outcomes and reports for each group and each individual participant. 

  • All other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Supervise youth ages 6-18.

  • Assist in training, and developing instructors and CITs to meet organizational needs.

  • Develop employee/CIT skills and performance through training and coaching.

  • Provide feedback to the Program Director on an Instructor’s performance, helping to develop an Instructor's skills where needed, and addressing performance.

  • Monitor instructor/CIT attendance and performance to ensure that they meet required standards of conduct and performance.

  • Assist the Program Director with Instructor/CIT performance evaluations and provide feedback on areas for improvement.

  • Maintain confidential information of all Instructors and program participants, including employee records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

*All certifications are required prior to active employment, but are not necessary at the time of hire. 

​

  • Successfully pass a background check: 

  • Must have no felonious convictions

  • No charges for child abuse or endangering the well being of a minor.

  • Current U.S. Sailing Level 1 Instructor required.

  • Current American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED certification required.

  • Current USSA SafeSport certification.

  • NYS Safe Boating Card.

  • Demonstrated experience leading small teams: setting expectations, monitoring performance, providing feedback, and administering both rewards and discipline.

  • Demonstrated organizational, record-keeping, and reporting skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with all age groups and across all stakeholders (staff, students, parents, patrons, board members, and the local community).

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

​

  • At least three summers of experience teaching in a sailing/swimming program.

  • Current U.S. Sailing Level 2 Instructor and higher certifications are desirable (e.g., Instructor Trainer, Head Instructor, Coach).

  • Current American Red Cross lifeguarding certification with the waterfront module is desirable. 

  • Ability to swim at least at Red Cross Level 5 or equivalent.

  • US Sailing REACH Certification.
